“United in diversity”, the motto of the European Union, first came into use in 2000.
It signifies how Europeans have come together, in the form of the EU, to work for peace and prosperity, while at the same time being enriched by the continent’s many different cultures, traditions and languages.
Still a lot of EU countries have their own motto:
- Egalité, Fraternité, Liberté = France
- l’Union Fait La Force = Belgique
- Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sinn = Luxemburg
- Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit = Deutschland
- Ελευθερία ή Θάνατος = Greece
- Ik zal handhaven = Nederland
- Съединението прави силата : Bulgarije
- Pravda vítězí = Czech Republic
- Plus Ultra = Espagna
- Tautos jėga vienybėje = lithuania
